2020 Box Subscriptions
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are you interested in the freshest produce grown right here in Jamul? Is knowing your farmer important to you? What about the assurance that your food was grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or any other chemicals and that it is the healthiest food that you could eat or feed to your family?
To help you decide if a Grateful Farm Box Subscription is right for you, here are some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
What's in a Box?
Each Grateful Farm Subscription Box contains 9 to 12 freshly harvested seasonal items from the Farm.
An example of a summer share would be heirloom tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, summer squash, peppers, eggplant, green beans, beets, arugula, cucumbers, flowers, and herbs.
A typical winter share might contain broccoli, beets, radishes, lettuce, kale, carrots, butternut squash, peas, cauliflower, and scallions.

Can I choose the items that will be in my Box?
While we are not able to accommodate fully customized box requests, we do make an effort to get to know our members' favorite vegetables and tailor what we grow based on their preferences. Additionally, at pickup there is an opportunity to swap out certain items based on availability.
Plus, by receiving a box of seasonal vegetables that are selected by the farmer, members have the opportunity to try new vegetables that may not be as familiar and discover new favorites. We grow many items that just aren’t available in the store, such as Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Thai Soldier Beans, and Candy Roaster Winter Squash, which many of our members discover that they love even more than the traditional varieties of these vegetables.
How often will I receive my Box?
Box Subscriptions are either Weekly or Every Other Week depending on your preference and availability.
When and how will I get my Box?
Boxes are available for pick up at the farm between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., on Tuesdays or Fridays, depending on your Box Subscription Plan.
How much does it cost?
2020 Box Subscriptions are $40/Box.
How does payment work?
Unlike most Vegetable Box Subscriptions with other farms (more commonly referred to as CSA), we do not pre-charge our members a seasonal lump sum for their Boxes. Members are able to pay for each Box when they receive it. Payment can be made in cash or with VENMO to thegratefulfarm@gmail.com. (Also see "What if I Need to Skip a Box?")
Will I know what is in the Box before I receive it?
Yes! We will send out an e-mail to all of our members before pickup to give you and idea of what items will likely be inside your Box.
What if I'm not sure that I will know how to use all of the vegetables in my Box?
We're here to help! We will send you periodic e-mails with information, recipes, and storage tips to help you succeed. At pickup, we are available to answer any questions regarding the produce and how to use it. We also have a private Facebook Group for our Grateful Farm Tribe, and other vegetable lovers in the Jamul Community, where we share vegetable information, recipes and cooking inspiration for the vegetables in the Box.
Plus, you are always welcome to reach out to us with questions throughout the week.

What if I am not sure that I will like it?
For every new member, there is a two Box trial period during which you can purchase a typical Box, twice, to give you a chance to try it out before you commit to a regular Plan. If after 2 Boxes you decide that a Grateful Farm Box Subscription is not right for you, just let us know and you’re off the hook. If, however, you are loving the variety, freshness, and flavor of seasonal veggies straight from the farm, then just let us know that you want to secure your spot and it is yours!
What if I need to skip a Box?
Skipping a Box is no problem, as long as you give us at least a full 1 week notice. This is simply because the vegetables for your Box have been planned and planted months in advance to make sure that we have the quantity and variety ready to be harvested at their peak of flavor and nutrition to fulfill your Box Subscription on your scheduled day. If we do not have enough notice to find them another home, they will likely be wasted. Therefore, any cancellations without one week advance notice will still need to be charged.
When does the season end?
The Box Subscription season for 2020 will end in mid-December, weather dependent.
Are the vegetables organic?
Our vegetables are grown completely without the use of pesticides or herbicides or synthetic fertilizers, however we have decided not to go through all of the necessary paperwork and pay the fees required for USDA Organic Certification at this time. Because of the common misconceptions around the organic label, we feel that it is more important to connect our members with their food and farmer so that they can ask the questions that are important to them and become confident in the way that their food is produced, rather than relying on a label. For more information about how we grow, visit our or just ask!
